Chapter Twelve

Lowell

I

decide to smoke a joint before Myles' party, and it draws out a mystical creature.

Alicia Bartlett walks out onto the balcony beside me. The woman is about ninety-six percent vodka. I smell that along with the perfume she always wears to cover it up, which obviously doesn't work.

"Hey, Mom," I say as she comes to stand next to me. She's wearing her usual nightgown-pashmina combination.

"Darling," she says, taking the joint from me and inhaling. "How are you?"

"I'm well. What are you doing up here?" I ask, tilting my head.

"I think your father is screwing a firefighter," she says, passing me the joint back.

That takes me by surprise. I take another drag. "Why do you say that?"

"He was talking in his sleep last night and using codes you hear on a police scanner."

"Why do you know that?"

"Because I used to date a dispatcher," she says. "Anyway, most of the codes were followed by the attention he needed paid to his penis."

"Mom, I don't need to hear this."

There's no way I'm correcting her and telling her that it's actually a police officer he's screwing. In the life-span of my father's infidelity, my mother has never actually really believed he was cheating. She's had suspicions, and they've always been wrong as far as she's concerned.

"You can hear about your father's penis—you're not that sheltered."

"I can, but that doesn't mean I want to."

"Well, I'll catch him," she says. "He's not as slick as he thinks he is."

"I know, Mom," I say. There's no reason not to just go along with what she says when she gets like this.

Aleta probably thought I was picking her up tonight, but I like to keep her on her toes. I hope 'Giraffe' will take care of her best friend and offer to pick her up for me, getting her to the party. I need the extra time to chug a few down. I don't know how long she'll wait before she figures it out, but I'll be well on my way to drunk by the time she shows up.

Tonight is a special night for me and my little goddess.

She just doesn't know how crazy things are going to get before the night is over. I'm getting heart palpitations just thinking about it.

But now my mother has wandered off back into the house, and it's time to go to the party.
